Welcome to my Plenity review for FDA-approved weight loss medication!

Approximately 73.6% of adults in the United States are overweight or obese. While this number is unsettling, it comes as no surprise. We are eating more processed, high-calorie foods and moving less.

Being overweight or obese goes deeper than your physical appearance. Obesity can lead to poor quality of life, mental illnesses, and life-threatening diseases.

In fact, obesity is associated with many leading causes of death in the United States, including heart disease, diabetes, and certain types of cancer.

While a healthy diet and exercise certainly play a huge role in losing weight, those with a strong genetic predisposition to obesity will likely find it more difficult to lose weight than others. However, this doesn’t mean it isn’t possible.

If you’ve been unsuccessful at losing weight despite making lifestyle changes, it may be time to speak with a doctor to discuss alternative treatment methods.

Thoughts On Prescription Drugs for Weight Loss From an RD

When you visit your physician to explore alternative weight loss treatments, they may suggest prescription weight loss pills. Most of the time, using a prescription medication provides minimal side effects and is an effective weight-loss method.

However, as we all know, there isn’t a magic cure for losing weight. If you’ve genuinely failed at all attempts to achieve long-term weight reduction, prescription weight loss medications or fat loss aids could be a good non-surgical way to effectively lose weight.

The problem with weight loss medications is that if you do not make permanent lifestyle changes or fail to seek ongoing support from a qualified healthcare professional, you can slowly gain the weight back.

Today, I would like to discuss Plenity, a newer prescription weight loss aid. I’ll dive into its nitty gritty details and discuss a couple of solid alternatives.

What is Plenity?

Plenity was developed by a Boston biotech company, Gelesis, which is known for providing therapy for various GI disorders.

Plenity is a prescription weight loss device that’s non-habit forming and stimulant-free. It’s considered to be a medical device because it does not get absorbed into your bloodstream. Essentially, it acts very similar to weight loss surgery by filling parts of your stomach.

They re-branded their logo and colors, which used to be an ugly purple IMO.

When combined with diet and exercise, it can help you eat less calories and shed unwanted weight by promoting appetite suppression and fullness.

Although Plenity does not offer individualized coaching throughout your journey, they do offer a private online Facebook community where you can connect with fellow Plenity users. You’ll also have access to information created by experts.

How Does It Work for Weight Loss?

For the device to work, users must take three capsules twenty minutes before lunch and dinner with 16 ounces of water.

They travel to your stomach after you swallow the capsules where the outer layer dissolves, releasing thousands of gel particles. The particles absorb surrounding water and can grow to nearly one-hundred times their size. These particles develop a firm texture similar to that of vegetables to partially fill your stomach.

Hours later, it breaks down in your large intestine, where excess water is released. After its job is done, Plenity is excreted in your waste.

For Plenity to work as an effective weight management pill, you must consume enough water to allow the particles to expand and fill your stomach.

How Much Weight Can I Lose With Plenity?

According to Plenity’s website, many people will begin to experience weight loss within four weeks of consistent use.

In a 24-week clinical study paid for by Gelesis, 438 overweight or obese individuals received Plenity or a placebo. The study found that those who took Plenity lost 6.4% of their baseline weight compared to 4.4% in the placebo group.

What’s more, patients with diabetes or pre-diabetes were six times more likely to lose over 10% (~22 pounds) of their body weight. However, it’s important to note that Gelesism funded this study. Industry-funded studies can often result in sponsorship bias.

The amount of weight loss that takes place is in direct ratio to your discipline.

Since Plenity is so new, there is a lack of long-term studies to explore how much weight loss you can expect with continued use. Nevertheless, your individual results will depend on your overall eating patterns, lifestyle, and exercise regimen.

What Are The Ingredients?

Plenity consists of two main natural ingredients—cellulose and citric acid. Other active ingredients in the Plenity diet pill are titanium dioxide, gelatin, and sodium stearyl fumarate.

Cellulose and citric acid combine to form a three-dimensional matrix that can occupy volume in the stomach.

Let’s dig a little deeper into Plenity’s two main components to see how they work.

Cellulose

Cellulose is an organic compound that provides structure to the cell walls of plants. Humans cannot digest cellulose, so it’s classified as an indigestible carbohydrate or dietary fiber.

Cellulose can also promote satiety and fullness. In fact, cellulose is often used as a filler in many diet foods to promote fullness without adding unwanted calories.

Citric Acid

Citric acid is an organic acid found in citrus fruits. It’s often an ingredient in weight loss supplements to help with fat burning and increase metabolism. However, research linking citric acid directly to weight loss is limited. Additionally, citric acid can also improve the bioavailability of minerals, helping your body to absorb them.

Is Plenity FDA-Approved?

Plenity is an FDA (Food and Drug Administration) approved prescription weight-loss medical device designed for individuals with a BMI over 25.

Should I Try It?

If you’re a self-starter who is already familiar with healthy eating patterns and exercise but struggles with increased hunger, you should consider trying Plenity.

Additionally, if you do not have substantial weight to lose, Plenity can be a good option. This is because it’s one of the only FDA approved fat burning devices prescribed to those considered overweight (BMI >25).

Most traditional FDA approved weight management aids are only available for obese individuals (BMI>30) unless underlying health conditions like diabetes or sleep apnea exist.

Professional medical advice:

However, it’s essential to get professional medical advice or speak with your health care provider before you decide if you should try plenity.

What’s the Body Mass Index Requirement?

To receive a Plenity prescription, you must be overweight or obese with a BMI between 25-40 kg/m2.

Where to Buy

Plenity is available in 49 U.S. States. As of right now, it is not available in Virginia. If you decide you’d like to try Plenity, you’ll need to go through Plenity’s website (www.myplenity.com/) to get the ball rolling.

The entire process is done via Plenity’s online platform. During your scheduled consultation, you will speak with a licensed physician. From there, you’ll share your medical history with the provider and answer general health-related questions to determine if you qualify for Plenity.

Once prescribed, Plenity will ship to your home free of charge via 2-day delivery.

Side Note: According to their website, your doctor will be able to prescribe Plenity in 2021. Additional details are not available at this time.

Real Ratings and Reviews

After scouring the internet and reading hundreds of Plenity reviews, I’ve found overall good reviews. As with any product, there are a few negative reviews. Most negative reviews were mild abdominal pain related to constipation and feelings of hunger later in the day.

Here’s a look at what real users are saying:

“I found out that I have to drink 30 oz of warm water and wait 30-45 minutes before I feel an effect. I have not had an issue with gas, diarrhea, or confiscation. I use a tea called smooth move found in the tea aisle. I do that 3-5 times a week to stay regular. I have lost 4 pounds this week by keeping my calories below 1500 and working out three times. I am also a server at a busy restaurant, giving me the extra steps needed for my off exercise days. The one thing that I love about the pills is I have not night-binged since I have started so far I am very happy”

“It wasn’t restrictive. I could still eat the foods my family was eating and still make progress toward my weight.”

With Plenity, I tend to eat less at meals…. I can look at that half of a sandwich and basically say, "You know, I don't actually need that.”

How Much Does Plenity Cost?

Plenity costs $98 for a 4-week supply or $1.75 per meal.

Is Plenity Worth the Money?

If you have the willpower to keep your diet and exercise regimen in check without the support and only have a moderate amount of weight to lose, Plenity may be worth the money.

Something to think about...

Additionally, if you haven't been able to find any effective weight loss supplements or medications, it may be worth your money to give Plenity a shot. Every medication works differently in our bodies, so it often takes trial and error to find a good fit.

Although Plenity has a private online support group, it does not appear qualified healthcare professionals are sharing information within this group. Furthermore, there is no one-on-one support or accountability provided throughout your weight loss journey. Other alternative brands offer one on one coaching with a similar overall price.

Alternatives: Need a More Comprehensive Plan to Lose Weight?

In my years of practice, I have found that accountability helps people thrive. Sometimes having a certified professional to talk to throughout your journey can make a huge difference. If you’re looking for a more comprehensive plan to lose weight, two of the best companies I’ve found to date are Found and Calibrate.

Let’s dive in a little deeper and discuss the details of these two popular brands.

Found Weight Loss

Found (www.joinfound.com) is an online-based, holistic weight loss program that takes a comprehensive approach to weight management. Within Found’s program, you’ll get FDA-approved weight loss pills, personalized health coaching, and community support. The Found program is based on science and aims to address weight at a cellular level, resulting in long-term weight management.

Found believes that losing weight isn’t always as simple as eating less and moving more. They realize genetics, hormones, and gut health also play a factor and consider these things when formulating your weight loss plan.

As a dietitian, I appreciate this because weight loss can certainly be more difficult for certain groups of people.

After consulting with Found’s qualified healthcare provider, you’ll be paired with a weight management plan that’s unique to your biology and medical history. From there, you’ll have access to a health coach and an online community. Your health coach will work with you to set weekly goals, track progress, and promote accountability.

If you’re looking to take things a step further with a full weight loss system without spending a lot of extra cash, Found may be a good option for you. Found is available for as low as $99 per month with a 6-month commitment.

Calibrate Weight Loss

Calibrate weight loss (joincalibrate.com) offers a one-year metabolic reset based on your unique biology. Calibrate’s signature metabolic reset aims to help users lose 10% of their body weight within a one-year period. This program rests on four main pillars of metabolic health: nutrition, exercise, sleep, and emotional health.

Calibrate

FHM Rating:

9.9/10 ⭐

Full Review:

Calibrate’s metabolic reset combines FDA-approved prescription medications with a team of specialists and an evidence-based curriculum for a total body reset.

Upon joining Calibrate, you’ll need to complete a comprehensive health assessment, including blood work. Medical providers analyze the results of your blood work and a health assessment to customize your treatment plan.

Calibrate takes a comprehensive approach to support you through your journey. You’ll have access to specialists in food, sleep, metabolic health, and exercise science.

Since Calibrate’s metabolic reset program requires a year-long commitment, you must be ready to make a lifestyle change before committing. Thankfully, Calibrate will equip you with an entire medical team of cheerleaders to support you every step of the way.

If you’re ready to make a commitment and prefer a timeline to reach your goals, I recommend Calibrate. Like other programs, their methodology is based on science and combines comprehensive coaching and prescription medications to achieve healthy weight loss.

Calibrate’s program costs $129 per month or $1,550 per year if you’re signing up for the one-year metabolic reset.  You may also do a one-time comprehensive metabolic assessment for $249.

Final Verdict: Does Plenity Really Work?

The results you see taking Plenity will vary depending on your commitment level. To have lasting results with any weight loss supplement, you’ll need to tweak your diet and exercise regimen to keep your weight off and avoid further weight gain.

If you’re a self-starter with motivation and prefer not to work with a team or health coach, you’ll likely be satisfied with the results Plenity offers. But, as we all know, it's super hard to hold yourself accountable. Sometimes, we just need a little bit of help.

For anyone looking to shed off a few pounds, or for overweight and obese adults who need a team to guide you and provide personalized coaching throughout your journey, I would consider choosing a program like Found or Calibrate that offers a comprehensive approach to losing weight. Thanks for reading my Plenity review!
