Every year, millions of people commit to eating healthier, being more conscious about their meal choices, and meal prepping their food to ensure they adhere to their goals.

But then life gets in the way. We’re busy, we’re stressed, we’re tired, and sometimes the last thing we want to do is sit down, come up with meal ideas, create the grocery list, go shopping, and then actually cook the food. It feels like one more chore on our already maxed out to-do list.

That’s where PlateJoy comes into play. I came across PlateJoy as I was looking for ways to better prep and plan meals for my family each week. They offer custom meal plans, personalized recipes, and comprehensive grocery lists to help you save time and feed yourself and your family better.

Is this meal prep service legit? Is it a good value? I tried out PlateJoy for myself and now I’m sharing my review of this service here for you so that you can decide if it’s a good choice for your family, lifestyle, and goals.

I’ll start by introducing PlateJoy then I’ll get into the specifics regarding who it’s for, the benefits, how it works, and how much it costs.

What is PlateJoy?

PlateJoy is a health and nutrition startup that provides customers with custom meal plans for every dietary need, food preference, lifestyle, and schedule. This service is for busy people who need a simplified process for eating better. With this service, you’ll get custom-tailored, flexible meal plans, grocery lists, and optional grocery delivery.

The company was created in 2012 by Christina Bognet, an MIT neuroscience graduate who lost 50 pounds by changing her diet and lifestyle. After successfully losing the weight, she made it her mission to help others on their path to health and wellness through customized nutrition.

Who Do They Cater To?

PlateJoy is a very inclusive meal planning tool that caters to many dietary needs and choices, including:

  • Clean Eating
  • Low Carb
  • MediterraneanDairy-free
  • Keto
  • Paleo
  • Kid-friendly
  • Vegetarian
  • Vegan
  • Pescatarian
  • Gluten-free
  • Low FODMAP

Additionally, PlateJoy offers plans that are designed for picky eaters (think toddlers!) and menus made for batch cooking. Regardless of dietary needs and restrictions, all the plans are flexible and customizable. You get to choose which recipes and ingredients fit well with you and your family’s tastes and style.

Once you have chosen your recipes, PlateJoy will create shopping lists based on them to help you organize and plan your trips to the store. They’ll even keep track of what’s in your pantry and on-hand so that you aren’t wasting foods!

Taking things one step further, PlateJoy is partnered with Instacart and Amazon Fresh, so those who live in one or both of these company’s deliver areas can also have all the ingredients delivered right to their doorstep with same-day delivery.

Lastly, the flexibility and customization options go far beyond any other meal planning app I’ve seen, allowing you to minimize waste and maximize your budget and time. For example, if one person in your home never partakes in breakfast, you can account for that in the plan so that you aren’t buying food for someone who won’t eat it. Or, maybe your inlaws are coming over next week, you can increase your portion sizes to make sure you have enough to feed everyone. You can truly make it exactly how you want it and need it which is refreshing because who has one week that looks identical to the next?

Next, I’ll talk a little more about how this service works.

So, How Does This Service Work?

How can PlateJoy create such customized meal plans? Through a personalization algorithm. It all starts when you take their quiz which will ask you about your dietary preference, how much time you have to prep and cook food, your health/wellness goals, and how many people in your family or household that you need to feed.

PlateJoy will then analyze your answers and will provide you with a menu full of recipes from its recipe library. The recipe choices given to you will be based on your goals, taste, style, and restrictions. Additionally, each recipe comes with al nutritional information so that you can easily plug the data into a tracking app like MyFitnessPal.

The menus they create for you are designed to minimize your grocery costs for the week, so you can plan on using many of the same ingredients throughout the week to make different recipes (don’t worry, they are not all the same and you will NOT be bored!). But, should you want to swap out a recipe, you absolutely can. Just keep in mind that you should do this sparingly so that you get the most out of your plan and your budget.

Have a favorite past recipe or a recipe of your own? You can add that to your meal plan, too! Having a craving for a specific taste or style? You can search for specific ingredients, dishes, cuisines, and even kitchen appliances! So now that you jumped on the bandwagon and got an Instapot, you can actually put it to good use.

Once your menu is set, you can view your personalized shopping list, but before it’s finalized, you’ll have the option to check to see if there are any other pantry or refrigerator items you need. PlateJoy will then keep track of your inventory and update what staples you have and what you need as you go.

The best part? PlateJoy goes as far as automatically scheduling your meals for you based on how perishable your various items are. Forget agonizing over a meal planning list, it’s all laid out for you in black and white. It’s meal planning simplified.

How Much Does PlateJoy Cost?

First, PlateJoy offers a free 10-day trial so you can experience the entire service before making the leap to a paid subscription which I love. Then, the cost of the plan following your free trial is $69 for 6 months or $99 for 12 months. Obviously, the 12-month package is the better deal, at less than $9 per month,  if you decide that this service is a good fit for your family. BUT I also scored a coupon code (FITMOMMA10) for my readers for $10 off your subscription, which brings the total cost down, even more, making the yearlong subscription just $7.42 per month when you sign up for the 12-month plan!

Keep in mind that the cost is for the creation and distribution of your customized menu and meals and the organization and tracking of your shopping lists and ingredients. The cost does not include the delivery of any ingredients or and delivery costs. That said, this service is still an exceptional value for busy individuals and families that are finding themselves on the never-ending “what’s for dinner?” hamster wheel. $7.42 per month feels like a total no-brainer when you consider the time, energy, frustration, and wasted food you’ll be saving. Not to mention the health benefits you’ll reap from eating healthy, nutritious meals.

PlateJoy Reviews: What Are Customers Saying Online About This Custom Meal Planning Service?

Per, there are 213 reviews of PlateJoy, with 96% of them being rated as excellent and only a handful being negative. After reading through the criticism, I discovered that they were mainly to do with troubles with canceling an account, which is incredibly common with all subscription-based services.

I noted that PlateJoy promptly responded to negative reviews, directing customers to their new and improved online help center that offers simple cancellations.

Overall, the reviews for this service are overwhelmingly positive, with customers stating they have saved so much time and money because of the convenience and efficiency this meal planning service offers. Additionally, customers are beyond happy with the recipes and the health benefits.
