Getting birth control online: Is it safe? Where should you get it from? How much does it cost? These are just a few questions being tossed around out there right now when it comes to getting your monthly contraceptive prescription online.

With telehealth exploding right now, it makes sense that birth control is now available online, too. I, for one, was elated when I found out that I no longer needed to deal with the hassle of visiting my doctor, waiting in the pharmacy line, and remembering to refill my prescription each month.

Today, I am talking about just one of the many online birth control providers on the market, Simple Health. I’ve tried a few, so I figured I would share my review so that you can decide if Simple Health is right for you. Here’s my honest, un-sponsored evaluation of this company with customer reviews.

What Is Simple Health?

Simple Health is a company that believes that all women deserve access to birth control. And I couldn’t agree more. So many health insurance companies have put barriers to access when it comes to contraceptives, and this brand is on a mission to make sure that everyone has access, regardless of their insurance situation, or lack thereof.

They make the process of getting it simple with online prescriptions from real doctors and medical professionals, automatic refills, and home delivery.

This company started off as Simple Contacts, an online contact service, however, they jumped on the online birth control trend as it began to increase in popularity. So they have been in the online prescription game for a while now.

Now, Simple Health is strictly for contraceptive and Simple Contacts operates as a separate entity.

How Does It Work?

Most online prescription services operate similarly, here’s how the Simple Health process works:

Step 1: Consultation

Your first step is to fill out your medical history and personal preferences online through their secure site. You’ll be able to indicate whether you prefer a pill, patch, or ring.

Step 2: Payment

Next, you’ll enter your payment details and determine what your cost is going to be. For every new customer, there is a one-time consultation fee of $20 which covers the doctor’s time. If you have insurance, you likely have a $0 copay so your only cost is the consultation fee. If you don’t have insurance, most prescriptions start at $15 per month. The team at Simple Health will help you find a way to get what you need while working within your budget.

Step 3: Get Your Prescription

One of their doctors will review your information and write you a prescription for the birth control method of your choice and a brand that fits in your budget. They have over 70 different options to choose from. If for some reason the doctor is unable to write you a prescription or you change your mind, you will be refunded for the consultation fee you paid.

Step 3: Autopilot

Your prescription will be sent to your door for free and will be automatically refilled for you. No more stressing about forgetting to call the pharmacy to refill, your birth control will now run on auto-pilot. You can cancel anytime you want.

You have questions, I dug up the answers!

Who can get birth control from Simple Health?

Before you go trying to get birth control from this company, make sure that you live in one of the eligible states and of proper age first. Here’s a rundown:

Ages 13 and up: California, Colorado, Connecticut, Georgia, Illinois, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, Washington, Wisconsin, and Wyoming.

Ages 14 and up: Alabama

Ages 18 and up: Florida, Idaho, South Dakota, and Texas.

It’s also important to keep in mind that they won’t issue a prescription to anyone who is deemed unfit.

What insurance plans do they accept?

According to their website, they accept most insurance plans, but they do not include a detailed list. I have a national carrier that’s easily recognized and they accepted it. You would be best advised to check with them before getting the process started to make sure they accept your insurance.

Can I use Simple Health without health insurance?

Yes! You’ll just need to pay for the $20 consultation fee and then they have plans that start at $15 per month out of pocket.

What if I’ve never used birth control before, can I still get a prescription?

Yes, their doctors will help you select a brand and type that suits your lifestyle and needs. On the contrary, if you already have a specific brand you want, you can request that as long as it’s one of the options they offer.

Can I get a BC prescription without my parents knowing if I am on their insurance plan?

There is no black and white answer here as each insurance company has different privacy policies. If you’re concerned about privacy, the best way to ensure that is to pay out of pocket.

How do the automatic refills work?

Once you have your prescription, you’ll be automatically sent your next month’s worth for the duration of your prescription. You’ll get an email from Simple Health when it’s ready for a refill. If you have a copay or are paying out of pocket, your card will be charged. You’ll then receive your refill within 3-7 business days before you’re at the end of your pack.

Does Simple Health offer emergency contraceptives?

Yes! You can get Ella, a prescription emergency contraceptive or morning-after pill at checkout if you need it. Generally, this is covered by most insurances as well.

Can I get in touch with a real person if I need to?

Yes, they have a patient experience team that’s available by email at [email protected]. And when you place an order, you’ll have an option to reach out to a live person via text message.

How long does it take to get my refill?

The whole process takes a little over a week from start to finish, in my experience. Once you fill out your information and place your order, it takes up to 3 days for a doctor to review it and write you a prescription. From there, they’ll send it out to one of their partner pharmacies who will mail it out via USPS where it typically takes 4-7 days to arrive.

Should You Use Simple Health For Online Birth Control?

In my opinion, Simple Health is a reputable company that’s providing a much-need service to women in the US. I found that their customer service was excellent, the overall experience was simple, and the wait time was a little over a week, which was to be expected and actually faster than most of their competitors.

If you're a woman who wants to make getting birth control easier and more convenient, then you're going to love Simple Health's service. Personally, I don't think I'll ever go back to getting birth control through the traditional avenue because I find it so much easier to have it delivered right to me without thinking twice. Their doctors are great and their customer service team is excellent as well, which gives me peace of mind that I'm dealing with a legitimate company that cares about me and my health.

I also researched other online reviews of Simple Health. Below is just a sample of what other real customers have been saying about this online prescription birth control service.

Final Thoughts

Overall, I do recommend Simple Health for birth control, however I actually prefer hers birth control over this brand. It's simple to use, convenient, affordable, and it takes the hassle and embarrassment out of getting the prescriptions that we need to take control of our bodies and our reproductive health.
