As awkward and embarrassing as it may be, let’s all just admit to the fact that sometimes we stink. Whether our noxious BO is coming from our armpits, feet, or down-below area, there are certain times when things smell...less than fresh.

Let’s put it this way, there are only 2% of people who have a special gene that prevents them from having an underarm odor. Although, I would seriously question if these people truly have zero odor and if that applies to other areas of the body. Regardless, chances are that you’re grouped in with the 98% of us who do stink.

I was recently looking for an all-natural, aluminum-free deodorant that actually works when I came across Lume and was instantly intrigued. First of all, they are a very cheeky D2C health brand, which had me all ears. Second, they make a deodorizing product that can be used on all our stinky parts.

Does Lume work? Is it possible to eliminate the odors that have embarrassed us and caused us to hide behind extra sweaters, socks, and underwear?

I dug into this brand to find out if it’s legit and to bring you my complete review. This was certainly a fun brand to check out which makes me extra excited to share it with you here.

What is Lume?

Lume (pronounce loo-mee), is the creator of the world’s only whole-body deodorant brand. The brand was started by Dr. Shannon Klingman, who was undergoing an OBGYN residency when she noticed that countless women were visiting their OBGYN with complaints about an odor down below. The solution was to prescribe them an antibiotic and call the problem BV (bacteria vaginosis).

What Shannon discovered was that these women didn’t actually have a bacteria infection inside their vagina, the problem was coming from the outside. So many women were and are taking antibiotics for no reason at all. Shannon knew that there had to be a better way. She not only disliked watching women be falsely diagnosed and treated, but she also saw the way the odor was ruining their self-confidence and knew that she had to make a change.

Over 10 years of clinical trials and experimenting later, Dr. Shannon Klingman discovered that the real cause of the odor was bacteria on the skin that was digesting bodily fluids. The same way that we all develop an odor under our armpits, it happens all over the body. Unfortunately, these odors lead to low self-esteem and embarrassment.

Shannon cracked the code and created a natural deodorant that’s safe and effective for use on the entire body by preventing external body odor from happening in the first place. She refers to it as more of a “pre-deodorant” than a deodorant because it stops the odor-causing reaction from happening, which in turn prevents the odor. Genius, right?

How Does Lume Work?

Here’s the deal, the reason why we smell sometimes is that the bacteria on our skin feeds off our bodily fluids (sweat, semen, urine, and blood), which then causes the bacteria to excrete an odor. Basically, we don’t stink, but the bacteria that live on our skin does.

Lume Deodorant works by stopping the odor-causing reactions dead in their tracks. Lume stops bacteria from feeding off our fluids, which in turn prevents the odors from happening. The best part is that it accomplishes all this while still maintaining the healthy physiological pH of your skin. It’s designed to provide protection for up to 72 hours (3 days!).

Although this product seems to work like magic, it’s actually rooted in science, which is amazing! For proof and validation, there was a Princeton Consumer Research study conducted that put Lume to the test in one of the hottest cities in the country, St. Petersburg FL in August.

They took a group of real women with real body odor (that’s us, ladies) and had them undergo a 10-day “wash out” where they didn’t use any deodorant or antiperspirant products on their underarms. Why? Because most antiperspirants and deodorants contain waxes and oils that leave behind a residue that sticks with you for days, weeks even. So these women needed to be completely detoxed from them when they did the study.

This seems silly but there’s a man named Barrie Drewitt, who is a worldwide odor guru that actually tests and judges deodorants and smells people’s pits and other areas to detect smells. Interesting, to say the least.

Anyway, Barrie Drewitt and his team were used to test Lume’s effectiveness and it suffices to say that they were blown away by the results. The conclusion was that Lume Deodorants for Underarms & Private Parts dramatically reduced underarm odor at 24 hours and kept controlling it all the way through 72 hours. That’s 3 whole days without odor and without showers!

Lume Ingredients

Lume’s exclusive deodorant has the following clean, natural, science-based ingredients:

Water, Mandelic Acid, Maranta Arundinacea Root Powder, Tapioca Starch, Isoamyl Laurate, Behenyl Alcohol, Hydrogenated Castor Oil, Caprylic/Capric, Triglyceride, Caffeine, PVM/MA Decadiene Crosspolymer, Naturally Derived Fragrance*, Potassium Hydroxide, Glyceryl Stearate, Stearyl Alcohol, Dimethicone, Panthenol (Vitamin B5), Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Theobroma Cacao (Cocoa) Seed Butter, Tocopherol (Vitamin E), Allantoin, Stearic Acid, Palmitic Acid, Cetyl Alcohol, Lauryl Alcohol, Myristyl Alcohol, Lecithin, Pentylene Glycol, Phenylpropanol, Sodium Benzoate, Tetrasodium Glutamate Diacetate.

How to Get Started Using Lume

Since you’ll be embarking on a new adventure by trying out Lume and ditching your old antiperspirant stick, you’ll need to do a little prepwork to make sure you get the most out of your experience, AKA to make sure you don’t stink!

Step 1: Prep your clothes

We’ve all had the experience of putting on a shirt and after just an hour or two of wear thinking “do I smell?” This is quite possibly due to lingering odors on your clothing. The waxes and oils found in regular deodorants and fabric softeners melt into fabrics and are really tough to wash out, allowing bacteria to stick around. You can prep your clothing by using an enzyme detergent like Persil (1 part Persil + 4 parts water) to pre-treat the armpits of your shirts after you wear them. Unfortunately, if your shirt is really old, you may just need to toss it. The damage has been done.

Step 2: Prime your pits

Lume works differently than any other product on the market, it doesn’t mask or cover up odor, it actually prevents it. This can take some time to get started - you’ll need to prime your pits to get rid of the waxy residue that ligers from your past deodorants. You do this by using a little Lume every day until you can remain odor-free for 24 hours. This process will look different for everyone and can take anywhere from 4-14 days to complete, so be patient and don’t give up too quickly!

How to Apply Lume

Underarms:

  1. Shower and dry off.
  2. If using the stick, elevele cream 2-3mm above the holes. For the tube, use a pea-sized amount.
  3. Apply a small amount of Lume to the center of your armpit, covering the hair-bearing area and about an inch or so around it. The cream should rub clear in about 4-5 seconds.

Private Parts:

  1. Shower and dry off.
  2. If using the stick, elevate cream 2-3mm above the holes. For the tube, use a pea-sized amount.
  3. Women – Working from front to back (never work from back to front due to increased risk for urinary tract infections), apply to the clitoral hood, labia majora (NOT inside the vagina or around the urethra), continuing back further to the perineum (the space between the rectum and vaginal opening) and sweeping up between your butt cheeks to your tailbone. Men – Apply around the base of your penis and between the folds of your legs, working back to the space between your scrotum and rectum, sweeping back between your butt cheeks and up to your tailbone.
  4. Wash your hands.

Feet:

  1. Wash and dry feet.
  2. If using the stick, elevele cream 2-3mm above the holes. For the tube, use a pea-sized amount.
  3. Rub into your feet, paying close attention to the areas between your toes and around your heels.

What Products Are Available?

Lume offers their deodorants in a few different applications. Their original, and most popular, product is their deodorant stick that’s designed to work on your pits, privates, and feet. The stick looks like a regular deodorant, but when you twist it up, a water-based cream similar to a lotion pops up that you will either wipe directly under your arms, on your feet, or on your private area. Or, you can use your fingers to apply the cream to any of those areas, rubbing it in like a lotion.

Lume also offers their formula in tubes, soaps, and wipes. All of these offer the same level of protection, just delivered through a different method. The method you choose is a personal choice, whatever is easiest for you. Most people like the deodorant sticks best, but it depends on where your problem area is.

For example, if you have issues with foot odor, the tube is really convenient to just squeeze some into your hands and then massage into your feet. For odors in the private parts region, the wipes make a lot of sense. But choose which ones work best for you or grab one of their bundles and try them all out!

What Scents are Available?

Lume offers a variety of natural scents to choose from. Keep in mind that there are no artificial fragrances being used, so these will smell much more natural than the deodorants you’ll find on your store shelves. Also, all of their scents are designed to be unisex.

  • Jasmine Rose - Calming with floral scents
  • Coconut Crush - Warm and soothing
  • Clean Tangerine - Fresh and bright
  • Unscented
  • Lavender Sage - Peaceful and calming
  • Crisp Juniper - Crisp and citrusy
  • Silver Spruce - Cool and forest-y
  • Bay Rum - Masculine
  • Warm Vanilla - Smooth, sweet, and spiced

They also offer curated multi-packs like their fall scent pack and summer scent pack.

FAQs

Q: How long will one container last?

A: Everyone is different and a lot depends on how often and where you are using it. Since Lume is clinically proven to last up to 72-hours, you should be applying it less, going longer than a day between applications. If you’re using the recommended pea sized amount, you can get 150 applications from the tube and 110 from the stick.

Q: I have a teenager; is this product safe for them?

A: Yes! We all remember how awkward our puberty years were and confidence is so important during that time. Lume can help teenagers with odors caused by puberty, menstruation, exercise, and those caused from polyester leggings and tights.

Q: Will Lume stain my clothing or leave any kind of residue?

A: Nope! Lume’s patented formula is water-based and does not leave any staining or residue. When you have staining while using other deodorants it’s due to the aluminum and baking soda in the product.

Q: Will it help control wetness, too?

A: Since Lume does not contain aluminum, it is not antiperspirant. Sweating is a natural process, but that doesn’t mean it needs to be stinky! With Lume, you may still notice sweating, but it won’t stink.

Final Thoughts: Is Lume Deodorant Legit?

Lume is a first-of-its kind product and a 100% legit website / company that’s bringing us a solution to a very common problem: odor. We don’t like to talk about the fact that we stink, but it doesn’t change the fact that we do. It’s part of being human.

I love how cheeky and upfront this company is, normalizing the fact that odors happen and they happen in places that we really don’t want to stink. Lume offers a legitimate solution for all our stinky areas, and it’s based on science and proven to work. So, yes, Lume is 100% legit.

Of course, you may read through some Lume reviews and see some people complain that it didn’t work for the full 72 hours, but Lume addresses each and every review and explains to the customer why that may have been the case for them, which is really refreshing to see. It tells me that they truly care about their customers and providing them with exceptional service.

This is the first product that I’ve ever seen that specifically addresses odor that comes from private parts. I love that it’s helping people realize that they are completely normal and in no way a gross freak of nature because they have some odor on occasion.

Overall, I am thoroughly impressed by Lume and think they are adding a solid product to the world and addressing many previously swept under the rug concerns. I think it’s a sad fact that 58% of women polled in a study said that they have avoided intimacy with their partners due to lack of confidence in their vaginal scent.

Ladies, vaginal odor is normal (unless you have an infection) and products like Lume can help treat it and allow you to feel like yourself! It’s a safe, natural product that you can feel good about using.
