GutBio Max (previously GutBio Align) by KaraMD is a legit gut health probiotic, prebiotic and postbiotic supplement aimed to maintain healthy digestion and overall gut health comprised of natural plants and minerals, made in the USA in an FDA registered facility.

Have you ever had to take an antibiotic for an extended period and noticed your stomach felt kind of icky afterward? Or perhaps you noticed brain fog after eating poorly for a week while you were on vacation. Why is Gut Health Important?

Often called our second brain, the gut or gastrointestinal tract has a huge impact on not just our body but also our mind. Have you ever noticed that you get “butterflies in your stomach” whenever you feel nervous? This is your brain sending a signal saying “you are nervous” to your stomach. The brain sends this signal by way of the vagus nerve. The vagus nerve is a direct line between your brain and your gut. Interestingly, the gut can also send signals to your brain almost as if your gut is a second brain. Since the mood neurotransmitters, dopamine, and norepinephrine, reside in the gut, the gut can send signals telling the brain “what mood you are in” so to speak.

This is why poor gut health can increase your risk of developing mood disorders like depression and anxiety. Poor gut health can also cause brain fog and increase your risk of dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, and other forms of cognitive decline.

The KaraMD company was developed by Dr. Kara in 2018. KaraMD provides a variety of supplements that focus on gut health, heart health, and reducing chronic inflammation. While the GutBio Max supplement focuses on gut health, gut health can also indirectly impact heart-healthy and chronic inflammation. GutBio Max comes in capsule form and powder form. Let’s look at the pros and cons of the this gut health supplement.

Ingredients Analysis

This supplement contains about 40 calories, 3 grams of protein, and 1 gram of sugar. It also contains about 3 grams of beneficial fiber. GutBio Max also states that it contains 10 billion colony-forming units of probiotics. You want to see 1 billion CFUs or more in a probiotic product. GutBio Max adequately exceeds this recommendation.

The benefits of the ingredients listed in KaraMD GutBio Max have been well established by extensive research. Let's take a closer look at that below.

Probiotics

Overwhelming evidence suggests that probiotics may help reduce the risk or help with symptoms of:

  • Mood disorders like depression, anxiety, and stress
  • Certain cancers
  • Brain fog, cognitive decline, Alzheimer’s disease, and dementia
  • Chronic, Autoimmune, and neurodegenerative diseases
  • Acne
  • Cold, Flu, and other viruses

Animal and human studies suggest that probiotics may help with mood disorders. In one study, mice were divided into two groups. One group of mice received probiotics, and one group of mice received a placebo. The mice that consumed probiotics were more calm and relaxed compared to the placebo group (2, 3).

Human trials, including randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled trials, observed a significant reduction in depression, anxiety, and stress symptoms when participants were given probiotics (2, 4, 5, 7).

Due to its anti-inflammatory properties, probiotics may help reduce the risk of cancer. Animal trials, as well as research on human cancer cells, found anti-cancer properties in probiotics. Some studies have even shown anti-cancer effects in patients with cancer (8).

Studies have shown that probiotics may help with memory and focus. Several rat studies have shown an increase in cognitive function and memory after the rats were given probiotics.

Probiotics may help improve cognitive function and memory in people with Alzheimer’s as well, according to a double-blinded, placebo-controlled study (10).

Probiotics and Chronic, Autoimmune, and Neurodegenerative Diseases

Chronic disease includes diseases like heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. Multiple Sclerosis, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Ulcerative Colitis, Irritable Bowel Disease, Lupus, and Crohn’s disease are all types of autoimmune diseases. Neurodegenerative diseases include Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, and ALS. What do all these diseases have in common? Probiotics may reduce the risk or help with the symptoms of all of them.

In fact, forty years of research, including animal and human trials, have suggested that probiotics may reduce the risk or help with symptoms of these diseases in varying degrees (11, 12, 13, 14, 15).

Probiotics and Acne

According to a recent review, probiotics may help prevent and improve acne. Probiotics may help with acne by not only stabilizing the gut microbiome but by also stabilizing the skin microbiome (19).

Probiotics and the Immune System

Prebiotics

GutBio Max lists 3 grams of fiber on the nutrition label. The prebiotic fiber in this supplement comes from agave inulin, flaxseed, acacia gum, and banana powder.

Postbiotics

Postbiotics, as the name indicates, are the byproducts or waste products leftover when  probiotics eat prebiotics. This process can happen inside and outside the body. Some of the byproducts often produced are short-chain fatty acids, and functional proteins and peptides (smaller amino acid chains). These byproducts provide similar benefits as prebiotics and probiotics (20).

Postbiotics have a few advantages over probiotics, however. Postbiotics are more stable and have a longer shelf-life, meaning they will last longer in products. They are also less sensitive to cold temperatures (21).

Of course, you should always talk with your doctor about possible supplements you are using.
