hiya health kids multivitamins rating

Fit Healthy Momma Rating: 9.5/10 ⭐

Hiya Health provides subscription-based multivitamins for kids ages 2 through mid-teens that are jammed packed with 12 organic fruits and vegetables, helping children get the nutrients (15 total essential vitamins and nutrients) they need with only 1 vitamin per day.

As a registered dietitian and momma of two young boys, I am always looking for ways to ensure that my kiddos are getting proper nutrition because—let’s face it—kids are hard to feed. Add a young vegetable skeptic to the mix and it downright sucks!

In fact, studies show that 90% of kids aren’t meeting the daily recommended intake of 2 ½ cups of vegetables and 1 ½ to 2 cups of fruit daily.

I’m a firm believer that vitamins and supplements cannot take the place of whole, nutritious foods. However, there are times where we need to fill the nutrient gaps in our little one’s diets.

Many of the kids vitamin supplements sold in stores today are more of a piece of candy than a multivitamin. Fortunately, companies like Hiya Health Kids Multivitamins have emerged to give our kiddos clean, wholesome daily vitamins without all of the added “junk” found in most supplements today.

Today, I’m excited to provide my complete, honest review of Hiya Health. I hope to help you decide if these multivitamins are your child’s new vitamin solution.

What Is Hiya Health Kids Daily Multivitamin?

Hiya Health is a subscription-based chewable children’s multivitamin service. Their multivitamin is free of sugar, artificial sweeteners, major allergens, and fillers. It is also non-GMO and gluten-free.

hiya health multivitamins for kids

Hiya was founded by two new dads, Darren Litt and Adam Gillman, who were shocked when they realized most children’s vitamins on the market today are filled with sugar, artificial ingredients, and additives that can cause more harm than good.

After realizing there were no options available that weren’t essentially glorified candy, they decided to develop a better solution.

Over three years, the duo partnered with pediatricians, scientists, and nutrition experts around the globe to manufacture a tasty, chewable multivitamin made completely with organic fruits and vegetables.

Hiya multivitamins are manufactured in a cGMP (Certified Good Manufacturing Practice) compliant USA-based facility with globally sourced ingredients individually selected for maximum absorption.

Their vitamins are also third-party to ensure they are free of heavy metals, pathogens, and allergens.

Hiyas vitamins are in tablet form because many pediatricians advise against gummy vitamins for children because they can get stuck in your child’s teeth and cause cavities. They can also be tempting for a child to get into and overeat, increasing the risk of toxicity.

What’s neat about Hiya vitamins is the fact that, since it’s a subscription-based service, you’ll continuously be getting fresh vitamins each month. Many vitamins sold in stores sit on the shelves for months, causing quality to decline over time.

Ingredients Analysis

Each nutrient-dense chewable tablet is made with a blend of 12 organic fruits and veggies including broccoli, beets, apples, and carrots to provide 15 essential vitamins and minerals.

analysis of ingredients of hiya vitamins by our RD

Hiya reports that their multivitamins can fill nutrient gaps in kids’ diets to support their immune system, promote healthy brain development, and improve concentration.

Unlike many other brands on the market, Hiya was able to find a sweet spot by creating a clean, delicious, multivitamin.

Their vitamins are naturally sweetened with monk fruit. They also contain mannitol, a naturally occurring sweetener commonly found in pumpkins and strawberries.

Let’s take a deeper look at why each vitamin in Hiya is important for kids' health.

Vitamin A, 360 mcg

Vitamin A supports healthy eyesight and immune function. It also helps the heart, lungs, and kidneys function properly. The most common symptom of vitamin A deficiency in children is decreased ability to see in low light, leading to blindness if left untreated.

According to a review from 2017, vitamin A supplementation is linked to a clinically meaningful reduction in morbidity and mortality in children in areas where vitamin A deficiency is common.

Hiya Multivitamins provide two important forms of vitamin A, including provitamin A carotenoids and preformed vitamin A, retinol palmitate.

Carotenoids are only found in plant based foods, so this ingredient is great for kiddos who don’t like veggies!

Vitamin C, 40 mcg

Your child is likely exposed to toxins and free radicals daily. Vitamin C works as a powerful antioxidant and can prevent damage caused by free radicals.

While it may not treat or cure a common cold, it can also help reduce the length of colds and help the immune system function properly to protect against disease.

If your child is like mine, germs seem to find them everywhere they go!

Although rare in the United States, vitamin C deficiencies are still seen in children with severely restricted diets. This can lead to scurvy which causes bruising, gum inflammation, and bone disease in children.

Vitamin D, 25 mcg

An estimated 61% of children in the United States are deficient in vitamin D.

Vitamin D is essential for healthy bone development. It also plays a role in supporting the immune system.

Severe vitamin D deficiency in children can result in rickets, which impairs growth by causing the bones to become soft and weak.

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, there is cause for concern related to vitamin D deficiency in children. This is due to a lack of natural dietary sources of vitamin D and limited sunshine.  The Academy of Pediatrics also suggests that vitamin D may support a healthy immune function and prevent diseases like cancer and diabetes.

B Vitamins

  • Thiamine (B1), 0.5 mg: Thiamine plays a vital role in your child’s growth and strengthening of their muscles and nerves. It also helps the body convert carbohydrates into energy.
  • Biotin (B7), 25 mcg: Biotin supports healthy hair, skin, and nails. It is also needed to metabolize fatty acids, cholesterol, and amino acids.
  • Folate (B9), 300 mcg: Folic acid helps healthy cell and tissue growth and DNA formation.
  • Pantothenic acid (B5),2.5 mcg: Pantothenic acid is essential for making red blood cells and helps convert the food we eat into energy.
  • Methylcobalamin (B12),2 mcg: Methylcobalamin helps support sleep, central nervous system function, and red blood cell formation.
  • Riboflavin (B2), 0.6 mg: Riboflavin supports healthy cell growth and healthy vision.

Vitamin B12 deficiency is very prevalent in children, despite being highly treatable. Studies show B12 deficiency can lead to cognitive impairment and anemia.

Since food sources of B12 commonly include animal products, it is vital for children following a vegan lifestyle to supplement with B12.

A review from 2016 highlights that children with higher B12 levels are more likely to have improved school performance, cognitive performance, and concentration.

You might notice B12 as methylcobalamin in Hiya’s multivitamin. In many multivitamins, it is found as cyanocobalamin, a synthetic form of B12.

Methylcobalamin is the naturally occurring form of B12, many believe it is safer than the synthetic form.

This is why Hiya chose to take the safe route and give parents peace of mind.

Other Minerals and Nutrients

Vitamin E

Vitamin E supports your child’s vision, heart function, and immune system.

Calcium is important for healthy bone development. When your child doesn’t get enough calcium from their diet regimen, it gets pulled from bones, making them more susceptible to breaks and fractures over time.

Iodine is an essential mineral that helps support your child’s thyroid function.

Your child cannot make selenium on their own. It often gets left out of multivitamins, but it is essential for supporting sleep, mood, and inflammation. However, it is very rare in the United States.

Zinc plays a key role in wound healing, cell growth, and supporting a healthy immune function. Although it is rare for a severe deficiency, a mild to moderate deficiency can increase infections and cause developmental delays.

Manganese is essential for healthy growth, brain development and supports bone health.

Though evidence is limited, studies suggest manganese deficiency can lead to bone demineralization and poor growth in children.

Are Hiya Health Vitamins for Kids FDA Approved?

No, the FDA does not have the authority to review dietary supplements for safety and effectiveness before being sold to consumers. However, Hiya uses organic, clean ingredients that are  third party tested to give you peace of mind when choosing Hiya vitamins for your children.

Claimed Benefits: Do They Actually Work?

There is significant scientific evidence to show that vitamins and minerals found in Hiya vitamins promote healthy growth, support immunity and promote better concentration in kids.

However, more isn’t always better. If your child is already meeting their nutrient requirements, it’s not likely that you’ll see a considerable change after taking a multivitamin.

Safety, Side Effects, and Dosage

First, let's answer a question I get a lot, and that is, "are hiya vitamins safe?"

Yes, hiya health multivitamins for kids are completely safe. Generally, multivitamin supplementation is safe for children. However, they are not necessarily needed for healthy children. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, most children do not need vitamin and mineral supplementation over the recommended dietary allowances.

inspecting hiya vitamins for safety

hiya vitamins are, indeed, safe for your child as they are packed with organic fruits and vegetables with zero added sugar.

Megadoses of some vitamins such as vitamin A, C or D may result in nausea, rashes, or headaches. However, your child would have to far exceed the recommended intake to experience these symptoms.

If you have any concerns or suspect excess intakes of certain nutrients, speak with your child’s pediatrician.

Hiya recommends one vitamin per day for all children. Never take more than the recommended dose of a multivitamin per day to avoid unwanted side effects. Your child can take Hiya multivitamin with or without food and during a convenient time for you and your child, day or night. Most find Hiya easy to incorporate into their breakfast or dinner routine.

Alternatives Compared to Hiya Kids Multivitamins

Many different companies sell kids multivitamins to meet the nutritional requirements of little ones. Let’s compare Hiya Kids to a couple of popular alternatives.

hiya kids vitamins alternatives

First Day is one of the brands that is on par with hiya, but let's take a look at some others and what the alternatives may be.

First Day

First Day kids gummy multivitamins contain nine essential nutrients from 12 organic fruits and vegetables to support your little one’s growth and development. They offer a subscription similar to Hiya’s. First Day is also environmentally responsible and ships monthly refill pouches if you choose to subscribe.

The main difference between these two is the nutrient profile and the sugar content. First Day multivitamins come in gummy form and have 2 grams of sugar per serving (two gummies).

Their vitamins have vitamin K, but lack minerals such as zinc, manganese, and calcium. A one-time purchase costs $32 a bottle. However, with a subscription they only cost around $27.43 a bottle.

Smarty Pants

Similar to Hiya, Smarty Pants kids gummy multivitamin contains 15 essential nutrients. They also have added omega-3s. While they are considered organic, they include 5 grams of sugar per serving. For your child to meet his or her daily needs, they’ll have to consume four gummies per day. In my opinion, this can lead to them becoming more of a candy than a vitamin. However, they are a cheaper option and cost around $20 per month.

Below, is a table on how hiya health compares to other alternatives:

Worth It? Final Verdict

Hiya Kids Daily Multivitamin is worth it if you’re searching for a clean, tasty vitamin that can fill in your little one’s nutrient gaps. While they are a bit pricier than competitors, the quality of their product truly outshines many other competing brands on the market.

Hiya’s multivitamin does not have fillers, added sugar, or other additives commonly found in other popular vitamins for kids. Additionally, they come in tablet form, which decreases the chances of cavities and your child overeating them.

Overall, the majority of children can get their nutrients from a healthy diet alone. However, I always say that moms know best. If you feel your child isn’t meeting their nutrient needs through diet alone, Hiya Health vitamins are among the best choices on the market today.
