Back when I was a kid, if someone offered me German Chocolate Cake, I was likely to pass, or at least grumble that it wasn’t just a straight-up chocolate cake. I mean, chunks of coconut? That seemed like such an adult flavor. Turns out, it might be because I love a good chocolate-coconut combination these days which is why I was stoked to create a German Chocolate Overnight Oats Recipe!

This overnight oats recipe is all the things – indulgent, high in protein, satisfying, easy to put together, and super convenient. You can prep multiple servings of these German Chocolate Overnight Oats in one sitting and enjoy the convenience of having your breakfast ready to eat in the refrigerator each morning. If you’re tracking macros, one of the biggest keys to success is preparation, and this recipe will help set you up for success and adherence to your plan. Plus, you’ll enjoy every single bite of it along the way.

And, since our last high protein overnight oats recipe was super popular, we decided to make another one, this time a little different of course!

3 Reasons Why You Will Love This Easy German Chocolate Overnight Oats Recipe

The first thing I think of when it comes to overnight oats is meal prepping, it’s one of the easiest ways to meal prep breakfast for the week which will make your life so much easier. Second, this recipe combines the richness of chocolate with the subtle sweetness of coconut and a hint of almond to give it a nutty flavor – trust me on this one, the flavor profile is epic on this one. Finally, these German Chocolate Overnight Oats contain 35g of protein! Talk about starting off your day on the right foot, no need to play catchup on your macros later by consuming boiled chicken breast, iykyk!

How to Make German Chocolate Overnight Oats

1. Add your unsweetened almond milk and a scoop of protein powder to the bottom of your mason jar, secure the top on tightly and give it a vigorous shake to mix the protein powder and milk together.

2. Remove the lid and add the oats, yogurt, shredded coconut, cocoa powder, slivered almonds, almond extract, and mini chocolate chips.

3. Take a small spatula or spoon and mix the ingredients together until well combined. If your jar has space, you can put the lid on it and shake it up instead.

4. Place the lid on your jar and put it in the fridge for at least 2 hours before eating, but overnight is usually better.

5. When you’re ready to eat, remove the lid, give it a good stir, add a couple more chocolate chips and coconut shreds if you’d like, and enjoy!

Swaps or Alternatives

The beautiful thing about overnight oats is that they are so customizable. If you want to really up the German Chocolate flavor, try using Clean Simple Eats’ German Chocolate Protein powder, it’s so good! If you don’t like the taste of almonds, simply leave the almond extra and slivered almonds out of the recipe.

Quick Tip

If you’re planning to use this German Chocolate Overnight Oats recipe as a meal prep for the week, I don’t recommend making any more than 5 at a time. In fact, I find that the sweet spot for overnight oats and their freshness peaks around the 3-4 day mark. So while your oats will certainly keep in your fridge for longer, keep in mind that you’ll experience the best taste and texture within the 3-4 day mark, so don’t get too overzealous with your prepping!
