I got this question inside our private Facebook group the other day, and upon answering, I realized that lots more people were wondering the same thing. So in true FHM fashion, we decided to write down all our thoughts about those questions here, giving you our best weight loss exercise equipment for your home recommendations.

In this article, we’ll discuss how weight loss works in relation to exercise (it’s not what you might think!), the benefits of working out at home, and which at-home exercise equipment options will help you achieve your goals.

Weight Loss Exercise Equipment Home Buying Guide

When it comes to working out at home and deciding which equipment to stock your home gym with, there are a few key considerations to keep in mind. Let’s go through those first before we jump into my recommendations.

Workout Preference

This should go without saying, but one of the first things to consider when purchasing home workout equipment is what kind of workouts you’d like to do. Are you a cardio junkie? Weight lifter? Both?

Take some time to consider what your ideal workout would look like, both from a goal-chasing perspective and an enjoyment perspective. What’s something that you can see yourself doing and enjoying for years to come.

Home exercise equipment has a huge range of pricing. You can go all out and purchase a pricey piece of smart home gym equipment, or you can keep things on the budget-friendly end and grab just the essentials. Consider how much you are willing to spend on your home gym equipment and what that investment will ultimately provide you with.

Space Accommodations

You could have great intentions to set up a grand home gym, but if you don’t have the space, it’s just not going to work. Identify the place in your home that will be used for your workouts and then consider how much space you have to dedicate to your fitness.

For some, they have the space to use a whole room, and for others, they need equipment that can easily be tucked away out of sight when not in use because the area where they’ll be exercising will be a shared space.

Gym equipment, just like a lot of our world, is “smart” and connected these days. Gone are the days of slogging along on your treadmill or elliptical staring at the wall…you can now purchase smart gym equipment that allows you to engage, interact, and be coached by experienced trainers, all from your living room!

If working out from home leaves you with a lackluster feeling and doubts regarding your ability to feel motivated from home, consider purchasing a piece of equipment that includes a screen and programming that will keep you involved, engaged, and committed to your routine.

What’s the Best Weight Loss Exercise Equipment for Home?

The straightforward answer: the kind that you will enjoy using and be consistent with. However, for many people, the real struggle is figuring out just what that is. If you’re new to exercise or are just starting out on your weight loss journey, you might not know what to get for your home exercise equipment.

As someone who has been working out at home for years and who has tested many exercise machines and apps, I know a thing or two about what the best weight loss exercise equipment for home is. Below are my recommendations:

1. Weight Training Equipment

Strength training is one of the most beneficial forms of exercise you can do to lose fat, build muscle, and promote longevity and graceful aging. More and more, women especially, are entering the world of strength training and seeing and feeling the incredible benefits it offers.

If you’re working out from home, having a few pairs of dumbbells on hand or a good set of adjustable dumbbells will be so beneficial. If you want to kick things up a notch, you could even grab a barbell or a smart home gym system that includes weights and personal training.

My Recommendations

  • Gain strength
  • Build muscle tissue
  • Burn more calories at rest (with increased muscle mass)
  • Reduces risk of injury
  • Strengthens bones
  • Helps to manage blood sugar levels
  • Easy to stash equipment somewhere in your home discreetly

Calories Burned Per 30-Minute Session

Between 90-250 depending on the session and the individual.

2. Spin Bike

Ever since Peloton pioneered the home spin bike craze, thousands of people have jumped in and gotten themselves a home spin bike. But whether you’re looking for a Peloton or the best Peloton alternative, spin bikes provide an incredible way to work out from home and help shed those pounds.

Most modern spin bikes, like the MYX Fitness system (Now Beachbody Bike) and the Stryde Bike offer so much more than just spin classes, it’s a complete home workout system in one convenient place. You’ll get access to weight training classes (where those weights will come in handy for #1), yoga, stretching, and so much more. The only downside is that these bikes usually require you to pay for a membership on top of the cost of the bike.

  • High caloric burn potential
  • Low impact exercise
  • Aids in weight loss
  • Many are all-in-one, giving access to tons of workout content
  • Small footprint for easy home integration

My Recommendations

You can burn between 210 and 733 calories by cycling for 30 minutes.

3. Treadmill

Treadmills have been a home exercise equipment favorite since their invention back in 1952. Although treadmills have come a long way since their beginnings, the fact remains that having the ability to walk, run, jog, and sprint indoors can be incredibly handy for those who are trying to lose weight.

Today, you can get all kinds of different treadmills, from heavy-duty smart machines that include a giant, interactive screen like the Echelon Stride, to simple walking pads that are saving desk-ridden folks from missing out on the crucial weight loss benefits that come with hitting your step goal.

  • High-calorie burn potential
  • Accessible for people of all ages and abilities
  • Can adjust incline and speed for customized workouts
  • Some fold up for easy storage
  • Walking pads are handy for under-desk steps
  • Allows you to move despite weather conditions

My Recommendations

4. Rowing Machine

Rowing machines have been around for some time now, but they have exploded in popularity over the past few years. Why? Because they provide an incredible full-body workout in a fraction of the time when compared to similar exercise machines.

So many smart rowing machines hit the market over the past couple of years that have changed the sport of rowing completely. Now, you can benefit from the full-body, calorie-blasting experience of rowing all while playing games, racing others, or watching Netflix.

  • High-calorie burn potential
  • True full-body workout
  • Beginner-friendly
  • Low impact
  • Relatively quiet

My Recommendations

I compared all of these rowers together, such as hydrow vs ergatta, and Aviron vs Ergatta and Hydrow.

You can burn between 250-370 calories per 30-minute session.

5. Smart “Mirror”

Smart Mirrors have made working out from home while still feeling like you’re part of a community or your favorite workout class a possibility. For so many people, exercising at home can feel lonely and boring. But what if you had the ability to connect and interact with real live coaches, trainers, and community members? What if you could have someone there to watch your form, correct it, and encourage you to keep moving?

That’s what you’ll get from a smart fitness mirror; an interactive training experience that allows you to get in shape, connect, and feel engaged, even when you’re training alone. Fitness mirrors come in all shapes and sizes and often feature an insane library of workouts spread across nearly all modalities.

  • Interactive training experience
  • Live workouts
  • Ability to do all kinds of workouts
  • Form cues and/or correction technology
  • A sleek and elegant addition to your home workout space

My Recommendations

You can burn between 200-400 calories per 30-minute session, depending on the intensity and type of the class you take.

Home Exercise: Here to Stay?

Back in 2020, the home exercise equipment industry exploded. Perhaps the best example we can use is the growth of the incredibly popular cycling brand, Peloton. In 2020, Peloton reported a $758 million, 232% increase from the same period the previous year.

Of course, no one expected that kind of increase to continue forever, life resumes and people go back to the gym to work out. But here’s the deal; working out from home has always been a thing and it always will be. Heck, I’ve been working out from the comfort of my home for years, well before it was the only option we had.

For those who prioritize their health and fitness, there will always be a need to have access to home workouts, even if you prefer the gym. Let’s face it, life is busy and it’s not always a convenient option to drive out to the gym each week. Some weeks, you might need to work out from home. And for many people, the realization that home workouts are just as effective, but far more convenient has come to them

The problem that many run into is deciding which home exercise equipment is worth buying and what’s in alignment with their unique goals. For many, the catalyst for purchasing home gym equipment is a desire to lose weight and get healthier.

Can You Lose Weight With Exercise Alone?

weight loss exercise equipment

Yes, but it’s not optimal, nor is it usually sustainable. I’ve had so many people come to me with the goal of losing weight, wanting to know what equipment they can buy or what workout app they should download. And while I’m thrilled to help them find a fitness and exercise plan that aligns with their preferences, I feel obligated to explain to them that they should not be looking to exercise to lose weight.

Weight loss is the result of a calorie deficit. Yes, we can create a calorie deficit by exercising, but as your body adapts and the less amount of weight you need to lose, the amount of exercise you will need to chase each day to continue to see progress will quickly become unsustainable.

Weight loss is best achieved through your diet as the main driver, with exercise tagging along as a happy passenger. Exercise in any form is amazing for helping you to improve your overall health, including your heart, as well as to create the shape and body composition that you desire.

The bottom line is that you shouldn’t be chasing weight loss through exercise alone, although it will play a role in your journey and can certainly be used as a tool to shed those excess pounds.

Final Thoughts: What Fitness Equipment is Best For Losing Weight?

The best fitness equipment for losing weight is the equipment that’s best in alignment with your personal preferences and abilities. There are so many amazing cardio and strength training equipment options available these days that you’re sure to find the right equipment for you. I encourage you to really consider what types of exercise you enjoy best and go from there.

Personally, I love having fitness equipment at home to use for my workouts and help me to reach my goals. Without it, I might not be as motivated to work out and stay consistent throughout the year.
