If you suffer from PCOS and you’re currently trying to conceive, you already know that you will likely have a bumpier road to motherhood than someone without it. But don’t get discouraged! You can conceive, have a healthy pregnancy, and give birth to a healthy baby with PCOS. I know because I did - twice!

Now, I’m not going to pretend that my story or situation is anything like anyone else’s because I know that we’re all different. However, there are certain things that the experts and health officials agree that we can all do to help improve our chances of conceiving and having a healthy pregnancy despite having PCOS.

Today we’re discussing the best prenatal vitamins for PCOS based on my research and my personal experience. I have three PCOS prenatal vitamin options that are designed to help you on a healthy path to motherhood and beyond.

What Is PCOS?

PCOS or polycystic ovarian syndrome is one of the most common conditions that affect women of reproductive age. This condition is caused by abnormally high levels of androgens (male hormones) in the body. 

Some of the telltale signs and symptoms of PCOS are weight gain, irregular periods, anovulation (lack of ovulation), abnormal/excess hair growth, and difficulty getting pregnant. I was diagnosed with PCOS back in 2015 and have since given birth to two healthy babies, all while maintaining a healthy pregnancy.

Part of my journey to motherhood with PCOS was taking a high-quality prenatal vitamin that helped keep both me and my baby healthy throughout the whole nine months.

Top 3 Best Preconception Vitamins For PCOS

If you search the internet for information and advice about living with PCOS or trying to conceive with PCOS, you’ll get a million and one different answers and opinions. But one thing is for sure, you will improve your chances of having a healthy pregnancy if you start out with the healthiest version of your body possible. This includes eating right, moving your body every day, and taking a good preconception prenatal vitamin as soon as you’re ready to begin trying to get pregnant.

A quality preconception prenatal will have a complete range of nutrients that includes folate, iodine, iron, vitamin D, and choline. These are all essential nutrients in the development of your baby’s neural tube, which happens during those very first weeks of pregnancy when you don’t even know you’re pregnant. Vitamin D is also essential for your fertility and a healthy pregnancy, particularly for those of us who suffer from PCOS.

As with any supplement, be sure you speak with your doctor before starting it to ensure that it’s safe for you and your body. All three of the supplement brands that I feature below have a preconception formula and then a prenatal formula. Essentially, for best results, you’ll take the preconception formula during your TTC period and then switch to the prenatal vitamin when you’re pregnant.

This first brand comes in two parts, there’s the Pink Stork Fertility Support vitamin that has everything you need for your TTC period up until you achieve pregnancy, and then there’s the Total Prenatal + DHA that’s designed to carry you throughout your pregnancy.

This is the supplement that I took during my second pregnancy and throughout my TTC period. The Total Prenatal can actually be taken in your preconception period and then just continued throughout pregnancy, but I chose to take the fertility support vitamin while I was trying and then switched.

This next option is from TheraNatal, the brand that makes Ovasitol, which I used to control my PCOS, regulate my menstrual cycle, and eventually conceive. I cannot recommend Ovasitol enough to all my fellow PCOS sufferers.

But I also love their preconception prenatal vitamins. These are packed full of all the vitamins and minerals your body needs to prepare itself for a pregnancy. These contain a higher dose of vitamin D than traditional prenatal vitamins as the vitamin D is essential for conception. You can continue to take these throughout your pregnancy, but I recommend switching over to their TheraNatal One supplement which is designed to support your body once you’re pregnant.

Next up is another amazing brand for fertility. Their all-natural preconception vitamins is specifically engineered to prep your body for pregnancy. Once pregnant, you can switch over to their Glow Prenatal Vitamin.

Both of these formulas contain all the necessary nutrients for the stages their designed for.
