What is Allbirds?
Allbirds is a footwear company that creates a unique category of shoes inspired by natural materials with a mission of creating things in a better way. Founded by New Zealand native, Tim Brown and engineer and renewables expert, Joey Zwillinger, this duo set out to use the magical qualities of merino wool to create a sustainable shoe.
The Allbirds brand has three main pillars that they structure and create all their products from:
Simplicity in Design
There’s nothing overly flashy about these shoes. They are simple in design and lack any flashy logos or funky colors or designs. With a focus on superior design and natural, sustainable materials, flash takes a back seat.
Confidence in Comfort
Every shoe purchase comes with a 30-day money back guarantee. If you don’t love your shoes within 30 days, Allbirds will take them back, no questions asked.
Made From Nature
The footwear industry has traditionally overlooked the natural, raw materials that can be found in nature. Allbirds changes that by using all natural materials in lieu of synthetic alternatives.
Reviewing the Tree Dashers Running Shoes
Allbirds has a full lineup of shoes for men and women, but since I was looking for a new pair of running shoes, I chose to try their very popular Tree Dashers model.
Despite being a very simplistic shoe, I was very impressed with the wool runners as soon as I saw them. I chose the Geyser color with the light blue sole and really enjoy the overall aesthetic of this pair of shoes. There were tons of colors to choose from, including their classics, limited edition options, and throwbacks.
I find them to be very comfortable, especially in the mid sole area. I do want to note that I did find them to be a tad snug when I first received them, leading me to think I should have sized up a half size, however, once I broke them in, they were a perfect fit (true to size).
Next, let’s talk about some of the details that are important as you decide if these sustainable running shoes are worth it for you.
Core Features of the Tree Dashers
I outlined some of the core features of the Tree Dashers. Let’s take a look!
Rigorously Tested Running Shoes
Allbirds is committed to more than just sustainability, they want to make a great shoe, too, which is why they rigorously test all of their shoes for durability and performance.
There’s nothing worse than investing in a pair of running shoes only for them to start falling apart at the seams within the first few runs. Allbirds Tree Dashers are unique in that they are made from a one-piece upper with FSC Certified eucalyptus trees that allow for a perfect fit and supreme breathability.
With a sugarcane midsole, these wool runners are optimized for cushion, stability, and energy return. Additionally, there’s a dual-density SweetFoam midsole that’s made from the world’s first carbon negative green EVA.
Cushioned Support (Merino Wool Lining)
Running puts a heavy toll on our feet, particularly, our heels. The Tree Dasher shoe is wool lined in the heel to provide extra cushion, support, and to help keep your foot in place and stable as you run or walk.
Responsive Design (Dual Density SweetFoam)
The flared outsole is designed to be ultra-responsive. With a blend of SweetFoam and a natural rubber traction pad, you get increased pronation control and stability.
A Perfect Fit
Aside from the one-piece outsole design, the other notable feature of these shoes is their bio-nylon eyelets that create a streamlined fit. Allbirds signature eyelets are embroidered directly to the internal structure of the shoe and provide extra durability and support for walking and running.
Who Should Try Allbirds Tree Dashers?
Tree Dashers are a great option for anyone who is looking for a new pair of running or walking shoes that are both comfortable and made for performance. I have tried so many different running shoe options, and they are not made for everyone.
Here’s a rundown of who I think the Allbirds Tree Dasher shoes are for. Try Tree Dashers if you:
- Love a simple but aesthetically pleasing looking running shoe
- Have wide feet and/or bunions (they have a wide toe box and knit upper)
- Appreciate shoes that are made sustainably and are eco friendly
- Want a machine washable shoe that keeps its integrity
- Don’t mind a heavier shoe
- Like the look and feel of wool
- Need medium foot support
- Run on the treadmill or on flat roads
- Need a great walking or casual shoe
- Want a shoe than can be worn everyday
On the other side of the coin, here’s who I think should NOT try the Allbirds Tree Dashers:
- Those who do long runs (more than 10 miles at a time) these are more for shorter runs, IMO
- Runners who prefer a flatter sole
- Those who want a flashy shoe (these are quite casual and discreet)
Customer Reviews: What Are Online Shoppers Saying About the Allbirds Tree Dasher?
According to allbirds.com, there are 244 reviews of the Tree Dashers with an average star rating of 4.5/5, which is pretty high for a pair of shoes. After reviewing the reviews, it’s evident that those who try Allbirds are incredibly impressed with the quality of the running shoe. Users are equally as impressed with the fact that they are made from fsc certified sustainable materials.
99% of the reviewers mentioned that they feel like these shoes fit true to size, but if you’re in between whole sizes to go up to the next half sizes to ensure best fit. Between the sustainable material (zq merino wool, sugar cane, etc), and the fact that they fit like a pair of socks but with soft, breathable material, most who try these sneakers are instant fans.
I also like to pay attention to what folks are saying about customer service from the company as I think that can be equally important. When it comes to Allbirds, the overall consensus is that the support is stellar and the inclusion of free shipping make Allbirds a top choice for shoe brands.

Final Thoughts: Are Allbirds Tree Dashers Worth It?
After wearing Allbirds for a couple of months now, I can definitely say that they are worth it. I find myself reaching for the Dashers quite often, particularly when I’m headed out for a short jog or a long walk. I also enjoy the look and feel of them for casual shoes, too. The detail of the laces and the large eyelets really give them a sleek look that’s not over done and could be considered appropriate for most professional settings.
I’ve worn my Dashers on the treadmill, outside on flat roads, and around the house and my feet always feel comfortable and supported. I love that they feel like a pair of socks as opposed to a running shoe because it makes my wide feet feel a little more free.
